Cricket Investigation

Question:Do crickets prefer smooth or rough environments.

Hypothesis:If I let crickets choose between a rough and smooth environment, then they will choose the rough one, because they live in rough environments outside and are use to it.

Backround Research: Crickets need warmth, food, water, and a safe environment to lay their eggs.

We set the tank up by putting a piece of sand paper in the inside of it with the cricket. We then observed where the cricket would be  the most, the smooth area or the rough area.

TWIS #6

This week in science,we started working with crickets. We started by going online and researching them.We researched what they liked and needed. After researching what they need,we started observing them.We made our testable question Do crickets prefer wet areas rather than dry ones. The crickets that my group and I had spent most of their time on the dry areas of the tank. After working with the crickets we started another group experiment using jelly beans. We used two different dichotomous keys to help us classify jelly beans.A flow-chart style key and a list style key.

My goup and I learned that the flow-chart style key is much easier and simpler than the list style one is.We learned that the flow-chart style is easier because it is more visual.

TWIS #5

This week in science,my class and I finished our rocket investigations. We also started observing animal behaviors. This week in science I finished the conclusion to my rocket investigation. After finishing our rocket investigation we began a new unit. We began the new unit by watching videos of animals and observing their actions. After watching the videos we began observing the behavior of crickets.

We learned that different animals behave different ways. Some animals may be more aggressive than others are. We also learned that different animals communicate in different ways.

This week in science,I tried to work on my plant investigation write up  with my four group members. My group members and I also finished out plant investigation experiment.I was surprised with my plant investigation's outcome because the plant we gave the least amount of attention to ended up growing the tallest and fastest. Before we could start our plant investigation write up,we had to assign parts for each of us to do.My group and I spent most of this week doing our write up for the plant investigation.I ended the week writing my conclusion for my plant investigation.
Last week,we gave examples of independent and dependent variables. We also wrote testable questions and did research on the plant Brassica Rapa.In the research,we had to include facts we learned and things we still were not sure about or still wanted to know about Brassica Rapa. The next day after doing our research,we did the experimental set up.We planted three Brassica Rapa seeds in three different cups( three seeds in each cup).As our experiment,we decided we would would water only one cup the proper way we should and water the other plants too much and not enough.

TWIS #3

This week in science,my group and I worked on our plant investigations. We kept data all week long of how our plant was doing in terms of growth. We kept track of how much water we gave them each day and how that had helped them grow.We also made a data chart based on what students like best: breakfast lunch or dinner. After adding the results together,we made a chart that showed everybody's favorite meal as clearly as possible.

This week I learned that for some reason, the plant we give the least amount of water to,keeps growing the most. This week,I also learned how to properly organize a graph with all of the needed information.I learned how to be specific and change the numbers into percents.I also learned that the most liked meal of the students in the class is dinner.

This week in science,my class mates and I observed how poppers work.We observed how high they popped, how loud the popping sound was,how thick they were, etc. We had to write down the poppers variables.Variables we could change and variables we could only measure. Also, this week we started our second plant investigation. We planted three Brassica Rapa seeds in three different cups and are going to measure how little to know water effects them.
This week,I learned about the plant Brassica Rapa.I learned that Brassica Rapa is a special plant that lives it entire life in just two weeks.I learned Brassica Rapa is a cross fertile plant,a bicot, and that it is an herb.I also learned how to change variables of plant and that changing the variables, can change or effect the plant growth.
